El Alfarero - The Potter

Letrero.jpg

El Alfarero, our girls´home, is situated about 27 kilometres (17 miles) outside Santa Cruz in the village of San José.

Some of the girls in El AlfareroThe home for teenage girls between 12 and 18 years of age has a capacity for around 12 girls (with or without children of their own) and consists of a dormitory block for the girls and a staff block including a kitchen/ multi-purpose room and a storeroom set on a 6000 metres sq. piece of land.

We want to offer the girls a safe place to live and to get to know God's forgiveness and love. At the same time as meeting their physical needs we also want to provide for their spiritual and social needs through a Christian rehabilitation programme.

The programme includes academic and vocational studies, devotional times and work around the home, i.e. cooking and cleaning etc, as well as working on the land and gardens with the aim of teaching the girls the necessary practical and social skills to enable them to make a living once they become independent of the home again.

Many of the teenagers within our target population are already mothers by the time they are 14 or 15 years old. So an important part of the home is teaching these young mothers how to bring up their children and when you consider the kind of childhoods they themselves have experienced, there is a lot to learn!
